Aaliyah Dana Haughton

Aaliyah Dana Haughton (/a:'li:@/ ah-LEE-@; January 16, 1979 - August 25 (2001)) was an American actor and singer. Her contributions to contemporary R&B hip-hop, R&B, as well as pop music earned her the nicknames "Princess Of R&B" or "Queen Urban Pop". Her birthplace was in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit. At 10 years old she was a household name when she performed with Gladys Knight on Star Search. Aaliyah signed with Jive Records at the age of 12 and her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records at 12. Hankerson introduced her to R. Kelly, who became her mentor, as well as the lead producer and songwriter for her first album, Age Ain't Everything other than a Number. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified the album double platinum after it sold three million copies across America. Aaliyah signed with Atlantic Records after Kelly was accused of cheating on her. The second album, One in a Million sold 3 million copies in America and more than eight thousand copies across the globe. The year 2000 saw Aaliyah appeared in her first film, Romeo Must Die. Aaliyah also contributed to the soundtrack of Romeo Must Die, and resulted in the hit single "Try Again".
